Notes From E-Waste World Expo Frankfurt: Where Circular Electronics Is Heading Next

Two days at Messe Frankfurt across four co-located shows — e-waste, battery recycling, metal recycling, and ITAD. Notes on AI-driven separation, new battery recovery processes, and where the industry is genuinely converging.

We spent two days at E-Waste World Expo at Messe Frankfurt this week — alongside the three co-located shows covering battery recycling, metal recycling, and ITAD & circular electronics. Four exhibitions, one badge, one supply chain.

It was the right time to step away from the day-to-day and see where the industry is heading.

What We Came For

Trade shows are easy to over-promise and under-deliver on. The honest measure of a good one is whether you leave with a clearer picture of the market than when you arrived. We did.

Three things we specifically wanted to get from Frankfurt:

  1. Time with the partners and suppliers we already work with. Email and Teams are fine; in-person catches things that don't survive the typed-message format.
  2. A close look at the latest recovery and sorting solutions — particularly AI-driven separation and the newer battery recovery processes coming out of the European market.
  3. Conversations with operators, manufacturers, and buyers — the people on different sides of the same circular electronics question.

We got all three.

What Stood Out

AI-driven separation is no longer experimental

At several stands, machine-vision sorting was running live on shredded streams — classifying polymer types, surface contamination, and component density in real time. This is the same direction we observed at SCIIF Shenzhen earlier this month, and the European market is catching up fast.

For us, the practical question isn't whether the tech works — it does — but how fast the next-generation hardware integrates into our existing Hermion AI sorting platform and across our facilities.

Battery recovery is the loud new conversation

The battery recycling expo was busy in a way the e-waste expo wasn't five years ago. New chemistry-specific recovery processes, especially for lithium-ion and the cobalt/nickel/manganese fractions, were everywhere. This matters for our roadmap — lithium batteries are currently on our Swindon site's not accepted list, and the European processing capacity for them is finally starting to look credible.

The buyer side is asking sharper questions

The most useful conversations weren't with technology vendors — they were with buyers. Procurement leads from manufacturers and ITAD partners aren't just asking can you process this? anymore; they're asking what's the yield, what's the documentation chain, and what's the carbon math behind it?

That kind of buyer maturity changes the game. It rewards operators who already have auditable data on their recovery streams — which is the whole point of how we've built our reporting at Riverbank and Preston.

The whole industry is pushing the same direction

The unifying theme across all four shows: better recovery, less to landfill, more material kept in use. Different operators, different technologies, different regulatory framings — but the destination is the same.

That's encouraging. It's also competitive — but the right kind of competitive. The market isn't shrinking; it's professionalising.

What This Means For 3R Technology Global

A few concrete things from the trip:

  • Earlier exposure to next-gen AI sorting hardware through the partner relationships we deepened — directly relevant to the Hermion roadmap
  • Active conversations on lithium battery handling that didn't exist for us six months ago
  • Three or four serious lead conversations that wouldn't have happened over email
  • Confirmed plan to exhibit at the 2027 edition — Frankfurt is now firmly on our trade-show calendar (12–13 May 2027)
